This week was eventful both locally and internationally: Moody\u2019s released their in-depth annual analysis on South Africa, the redacted version of Mueller\u2019s Report may be released, and Notre-Dame went up in flames.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Global News <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/15\/us\/politics\/mueller-report-release.html\">redacted report<\/a>\u00a0on Russia\u2019s involvement in President Trump\u2019s presidential campaign should be released today.<\/li>\n<li>Fed Chair Jerome Powell has adjusted the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-17\/powell-adopts-whites-of-the-eyes-inflation-stance-yellen-shunned?cmpid=BBD041719_BIZ&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=190417&amp;utm_campaign=bloombergdaily\">Fed\u2019s strategy for dealing with inflation<\/a>. Chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities LLC, Stephen Stanley, said that the new policy wouldn\u2019t lead to rate hikes until price rises accelerate.<\/li>\n<li>The US Commerce Department has said that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/world\/americas\/2019-04-17-us-trade-deficit-hits-eight-month-low-on-weak-chinese-imports\/\">US deficit on trade in goods and services narrowed<\/a>\u00a0by 3.4% in February from January, thanks in large part to a pickup in exports.<\/li>\n<li>China had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-17\/china-s-economic-growth-unexpectedly-held-up-in-first-quarter\">better than expected economic growth<\/a>\u00a0in the first quarter of 2019. The GDP rose by 6.4% from the first quarter a year earlier. Year-to-date\u00a0retail sales expanded by 8.7% and investments were up by 6.3%.\u00a0In March alone factory output hiked up by 8.5% from the previous year.<\/li>\n<li>The EU aims to confirm a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trade-eu\/eu-says-it-is-ready-to-launch-u-s-trade-talks-but-without-agriculture-idUSKCN1RR0OZ\">trade agreement with the US<\/a>\u00a0before the end of the year, this was announced by European Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmstrom, on Monday.<\/li>\n<li>Notre-Dame was engulfed in flames this week. Currently, the fire is being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/16\/europe\/notre-dame-cathedral-fire-intl\/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&amp;utm_campaign=aa99f8b23e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_04_17_07_38&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6da287d761-aa99f8b23e-92765437\">treated as an accident<\/a>\u00a0as a likely result of the\u00a0renovation that was taking place. In one day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-04-16-over-560m-pledged-to-restore-notre-dame-cathedral-in-paris\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=First%20Thing%20Wednesday%2017%20April%202019%20Spartan&amp;utm_content=First%20Thing%20Wednesday%2017%20April%202019%20Spartan+CID_ca8e321816ebdb46b0a7635c95fa4767&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=560-million%20pledged%20for%20Notre-Dame\">$560 million<\/a>\u00a0was pledged for Notre-Dame\u2019s restoration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Local News <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/article\/south-africas-growing-debt-a-concern-moodys-2019-04-16\">Moody\u2019s, in their in-depth annual analysis<\/a>, has said that they are concerned about South Africa\u2019s rising government debt linked to the bailouts of state-run enterprises. They also raised concern over our persistently high unemployment rates.
