{"id":64481,"date":"2019-08-30T15:43:35","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T15:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dynasty.co.za\/?p=64481"},"modified":"2021-06-22T17:25:07","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T17:25:07","slug":"johnson-trade-talks-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dynasty.co.za\/staging\/johnson-trade-talks-news\/","title":{"rendered":"News Flash: Johnson, trade talks, SA economic growth plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There seems to be a measure of closure on the horizon to events that have occupied the news for the past two years and more &#8211; the Brexit deadline is on its way and Prime Minister Boris Johnson\u2019s actions do not seem to indicate any intention of postponement; trade talks are being mediated; and plans for South Africa\u2019s economic growth are being put forward by the Treasury, although this positive development was tempered by a slew of negative news from our SOE\u2019s as detailed below.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Global News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Queen of England has given consent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-08-28-british-pm-to-suspend-parliament-before-brexit-opposition-denounces-coup\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=First%20Thing%20Thursday%2029%20August%202019%20Wine%20Cellar&amp;utm_content=First%20Thing%20Thursday%2029%20August%202019%20Wine%20Cellar+CID_91e76b74503930a5bf70260301b29a0f&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=Queen%20assents%20to%20halting%20parliament\">halt parliament<\/a>. This will mean that parliament will be suspended for more than a month before the Brexit deadline, effectively\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/28\/uk\/uk-parliament-suspension-what-it-means-for-brexit-gbr-intl\/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&amp;utm_campaign=9de149fbc9-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_08_29_07_32&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6da287d761-9de149fbc9-92765437\">narrowing the window<\/a>\u00a0for lawmakers to oppose Johnson\u2019s Brexit deal. This has, of course, enraged the opposition.<\/li>\n<li>China has said that it would not immediately retaliate against the US\u2019s latest tariff increase. China\u2019s Commerce Ministry spokesman, Gao Feng, said: \u201cChina has ample means for retaliation, but thinks the question that should be discussed now is about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-29\/china-indicates-it-won-t-retaliate-against-newest-u-s-tariffs?cmpid=BBD082919_MKT&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=190829&amp;utm_campaign=markets\">removing the new tariffs to prevent escalation.<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The US yield curve inversion deepened to levels not seen since 2007, this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-bonds\/u-s-yield-inversion-deepens-stokes-recession-fears-idUSKCN1VH279\">stoked recession fears\u00a0<\/a>once again. Notwithstanding this, it is interesting to note that the S&amp;P 500 gained 1.9% for the week as at the time of writing.<\/li>\n<li>The S&amp;P Global Ratings Agency lowered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-08-30-argentinas-credit-rating-cut-to-selective-default-by-sp\/\">Argentina\u2019s foreign and local currency credit ratings<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>selective default<\/em>\u00a0after the country reported that it would delay payments on $101 billion of debt.\u00a0<strong>On the news, the peso fell by 20%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Local News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, tried to alleviate fears over the implementation of National Health Insurance (NHI), by saying that the rollout would be slow, steady and affordable and would not be done in a way that\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-08-29-south-africa-says-health-plan-is-affordable-wont-add-to-debt\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Afternoon%20Thing%20Thursday%2029%20August%202019%20Vineyard&amp;utm_content=Afternoon%20Thing%20Thursday%2029%20August%202019%20Vineyard+CID_a46ec2b8c7782440d106bb9ffc084e1a&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=NHI%20to%20come%20out%20steady%20slow%20and%20affordable\">&#8220;bankrupts the country&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, distributed a surprise growth plan to all cabinet ministries this week. In this strategy document, he calls for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-08-28-in-his-policy-paper-mboweni-demands-urgent-action-to-improve-and-grow-economy\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Business%20Maverick%20Wednesday%2028%20August%202019&amp;utm_content=Business%20Maverick%20Wednesday%2028%20August%202019+CID_6578cbc1a255aaf888f1d8d915dd7844&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=In%20his%20policy%20paper%20Mboweni%20demands%20urgent%20action%20to%20improve%20and%20grow%20economy\">urgent action to improve and grow the economy<\/a>, the paper lays out plans to boost economic growth by between 2-3% and to create 1 million additional jobs.<\/li>\n<li>The restructuring of Eskom has been met with substantial political support, but a collision may be in line with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
