It was an opportunity for President Cyril Ramaphosa to show that South Africa is still an economic leader in Africa. This, however, got overshadowed by protests against violence towards women and femicide in the country. Other African countries also criticised South Africa for not doing more to protect foreigners in xenophobic protests that have gripped the country over the past week.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Global News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This week has not gone to Prime Minister Johnson\u2019s plan after his third defeat in the House of Commons in two days. He called for snap elections to take place mid-October before the 30 October Brexit deadline. This has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/09\/boris-johnson-defeated-snap-uk-election-190904201302893.html\">rejected by MPs on both sides<\/a> \u2013 another Brexit delay is seeming increasingly plausible.<\/li>\n<li>Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has sworn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-09-04-hong-kongs-leader-scraps-extradition-bill-that-sparked-historic-unrest\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Afternoon%20Thing%20Wednesday%204%20September%202019%20Zeitz%20Mocaa&amp;utm_content=Afternoon%20Thing%20Wednesday%204%20September%202019%20Zeitz%20Mocaa+CID_b600141b086d0ca7b745b6d3f8430e5c&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=Carrie%20on%20my%20wayward%20son%20-%20extradition%20bill%20to%20go\">withdraw the controversial extradition bill<\/a> that has initiated violent protests in the region. Although protest leaders have four other demands, this is a positive step towards stability.<\/li>\n<li>China and the US will be returning to trade negotiations in early October. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/04\/investing\/asian-market-latest-us-china-trade-talks\/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&amp;utm_campaign=78c9bcc9e2-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_09_05_07_59&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6da287d761-78c9bcc9e2-92765437\">Asian markets and US stocks jumped<\/a> on the news.<\/li>\n<li>Argentina\u2019s Central Bank Governor, Guido Sandleris, has told reporters that they are in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-09-03-argentina-in-talks-with-imf-on-september-monetary-policy-target\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Business%20Maverick%20Tuesday%203%20September%202019&amp;utm_content=Business%20Maverick%20Tuesday%203%20September%202019+CID_8d1c400b3edcdb4fd191497ccebfa47f&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=Argentina%20in%20Talks%20With%20IMF%20on%20September%20Monetary%20Policy%20Target\">revise their monetary policy<\/a> target for September. This is after our report last week that the peso had dropped by 20%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Local News <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Xenophobia and protests have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/wef\/wef-africa\/2019\/09\/05\/protests-xenophobia-sa-investment?utm_source=Biznews.com+Main&amp;utm_campaign=ea33713a2b-dailyinsider&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_b56abc3f25-ea33713a2b-101454393\">dampened Ramaphosa\u2019s WEF investment drive<\/a>.
