Jeremy Corbyn is facing calls to resign after the crushing defeat, the worst for the labour party since 1935.<\/li>\n<li>European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has said that the euro zone\u2019s economic slowdown is showing signs of bottoming out, suggesting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-12\/ecb-s-lagarde-says-euro-zone-slowdown-shows-signs-of-easing?cmpid=BBD121219_BIZ&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=191212&amp;utm_campaign=bloombergdaily\">further interest-rate cuts<\/a>\u00a0are unlikely any time soon.<\/li>\n<li>President Trump has signed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/12\/12\/politics\/us-china-phase-one-trade-deal\/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&amp;utm_campaign=3f51153208-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_12_13_02_23&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6da287d761-3f51153208-92765437\">phase one trade deal<\/a>\u00a0with China! This deal delays imminent tariffs on Chinese goods worth billions of dollars and reduces some tariffs already in place. In return, China has pledged to purchase American farm goods. Global equity markets and emerging market currencies (including the rand), have responded very positively in the wake of this \u2018risk-on\u2019 development.<\/li>\n<li>The Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives will likely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/12\/10\/politics\/donald-trump-impeachment\/index.html?utm_source=CNN+Five+Things&amp;utm_campaign=18faef88e0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_12_10_02_06&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_6da287d761-18faef88e0-92765437\">approve articles of impeachment<\/a>\u00a0against President Trump later today. This will set up a vote by the full House next week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Local News<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>President Ramaphosa addressed the South African people regarding the sudden and sustained load shedding that impacted the country. He said that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/briefs\/2019\/12\/11\/cyril-ramaphosa-sabotage-eskom-loadshedding\">sabotage<\/a>\u00a0was partially to blame for the widespread power cuts.<\/li>\n<li>The mining industry has requested permission to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2019-12-13-the-mining-industry-wants-to-produce-its-own-power\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Business%20Maverick%20Friday%2013%20December%202019&amp;utm_content=Business%20Maverick%20Friday%2013%20December%202019+CID_3e8f19756e3899e1fccc9cd800eaa419&amp;utm_source=TouchBasePro&amp;utm_term=The%20mining%20industry%20wants%20to%20produce%20its%20own%20power\">produce its own power<\/a>. It is up to Gwede Mantashe the Minister of Mineral Resources to consider the appeal. The industry\u2019s request states that they could generate 869MW of solar power and up to another 800MW of conventional power themselves.<\/li>\n<li>The Passenger and Rail Agency (Prasa) has been put\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biznews.com\/global-investing\/2019\/12\/09\/prasa-saa-public-administration\">under administration<\/a>\u00a0and its current board has been dissolved.
